Background

The award was instituted in 2004 as the sole carrier e from the Literary Association v. Minden. It is named after Voltaire's novel Candide. In the prologue to the second edition of this novel mentions Voltaire that the fictional author died in Minden at the Battle of Minden 1759. She was the first decisive defeat of the Kingdom of France against Great Britain. In this controversy, France lost its supremacy in the world to England. Voltaire led the ignominious defeat of the French at the Battle of Minden back to the depraved morals of the French. Your corresponded to the real risk of bankruptcy of the once so glorious kingdom. Obviously, Voltaire has recognized its geopolitical importance, two years after the battle. The novel Candide speaks powerfully of the sunken French culture.

This " adventure novel full of wit against the backdrop of a world full of injustice and terror ( is ) at the same time a philosophical debate ," the Literary Club Minden explains the connection with the name of the award. Gilles Deleuze have seen in this work, which was put on the Index in 1762 the replacement of the theological by the human understanding of the world.

Political debate about the award in 2011

In 2011, the prize money of the book binding machine manufacturer Kolbus should be donated from Rahden. After Peter Handke has been selected as a prize winner, the Kolbus pulled due to Handke's stance on Serbia back the prize money, fearing an impact on internal business. Critics accuse Handke before a trivialization of the Serbian war crimes. The prize was awarded Handke therefore as an ideal award. The ceremonial handover of the price did not take place because Handke refused under these circumstances to Minden to come.

The jury of the Literary Association Minden were at this time in addition to the chairman Gerd Voswinkel the Chairman of the Literary Association Minden Michael Scholz, the author Katja Lange -Müller, the literary critic Richard Kämmerlings and Franziska Augstein, the daughter of former Mirror editor Rudolf Augstein and feature writer of the South German newspaper. The chairman of the jury Gerhard Vohswinkel occurred after the rejection of the prize by Kolbus from the Literary Association Minden.
