Cap Ferrat

The Cap Ferrat is a peninsula on the Côte d' Azur. It is located between Nice and Monaco, belongs to the region Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur, the Alpes-Maritimes department, Arrondissement Nice, Canton of Villefranche -sur -Mer and the municipality of Saint- Jean-Cap -Ferrat, the town of the same at its eastern shore. The peninsula separates Beaulieu -sur -Mer Villefranche -sur -Mer.

Attractions

The Cap Ferrat is appreciated not only an exquisite residential area, but is also a popular attraction for tourists. Spacious villas with partly wooded areas, the Grand-Hotel du Cap- Ferrat and a ring road on the hill ( Boulevard du Général de Gaulle) offer a park -like setting. In addition to some quiet coves on the sea, suitable for bathing, the main attraction is probably the Museum Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. In 1905, the daughter of a millionaire's bank Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild had built on the Cap a palazzo in the Tuscan style, the park is one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe.

The Lighthouse

The whole peninsula can be circumnavigated right on the coast on a footpath ( Chemin des Douaniers, Chemin de la Carrière ). At its southern tip at the end of the Chemin du Phare is a lighthouse as a navigation guide (Phare du Cap Ferrat ). This upwardly tapering tower building stone has a pentagonal cross-section, which merges at its base with increasing height in an octagonal cross-section. On a roof pulpit with stone balustrade is the cylindrical lamp housing. The tower was built in 1827 at the time of the Kingdom of Sardinia, instead of a more ancient lighthouse and in 1838 launched its new signal light. Both the original as well as the then-new tower mainly served eviction ship in the harbor of Villefranche -sur -Mer. During the Second World War the tower was destroyed in 1944 by the German Wehrmacht in 1949 reconstructed by the Corps of Ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées and 1952 taken his signal light again. The lighthouse itself is now 34 meters high, so it due to its location on the peninsula slope reaches the total height of 78 meters above sea level and its beacon is sea to see each other within a radius of about 45 kilometers. For Bezitz located in the French State lighthouse has a living house, a shed and a larger garden.

The semaphore

At the highest peak in the southern part of the peninsula is also a maritime signal and observation station ( Semaphore du Cap Ferrat ). It was 1862 whoosh of Napoleon III. built, is now run by the French Navy ( Marine nationale) and serves both inland forest fire surveillance such as marine side of the general navigation scheme, including coastal protection, sea rescue and military coastal defense. From a 23 meter high tower into a total height of 143 meters above sea level is carried out the visual and electronic surveillance (radar ) of the surrounding land and marine areas, the emission of electromagnetic navigation signals and the transmission, coordination and control of civil and military Seefunkverkehrs. The station with tower and other antenna installations located on an enclosed and supervised military area, can be reached via the Chemin du Semaphore and can be visited at the French Cultural Festival in the month of September each year.
