Cape Verdean presidential election, 2006

The presidential elections in Cape Verde in 2006 took place on February 12, 2006. It was the fourth election since the introduction of multiparty system in Cape Verde in 1990.

As representatives of the two largest parties in Cape Verde, the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde ( PAICV ) and the Movement for Democracy ( MPD), the former President Pedro Pires and Prime Minister Carlos Veiga, the former stood for election. Thus, it was the same as candidates in the presidential elections of 2001.

Previously, the PAICV had reached an absolute majority of votes and seats in the parliamentary elections in January 2006.

Result

Voter turnout was 53.1 %.
