Cardanus (crater)

49.57

Cardanus is an impact crater on the westernmost edge of the lunar front side, therefore, if at all, only highly distorted from Earth visible. Located just south of the crater Krafft in the plane of Oceanus Procellarum. Between Cardanus and Krafft the crater chain Catena Krafft runs. Cardanus has a relatively sharply defined, slightly irregular crater rim on several occasions with terraced inner wall.

South of Cardanus runs from east to west the moon groove Rima Cardanus.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano.
