The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is one of the FCI recognized British breed (FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 38).

Origin and History

The " Cardigan " is already in the 10th century and comes from Wales, he is supposed to be a descendant of the Welsh Sheepdogs and in the 12th century he was known as a cattle dog. Corgi in Welsh means " smaller ( lower) dog " and the name of Cardigan has the county of Cardiganshire, from which he comes. He was in addition to its use as a farm dog used mainly as fuel and herding the livestock, especially cattle and ponies. In 1892 he was exhibited in Wales for the first time. 1925 Cardigan and Pembroke were jointly recognized by the Kennel Club as a breed, until 1934, after many disputes a separate recognition of the two races. In Germany there is the race since 1974, annual fall about five throws.

Description

The burly, stocky dog in the ideal of the breed standard a shoulder height of 30 cm; the weight should be proportional to the size and give a balanced picture. He has short or medium length hair with a dense undercoat in any color usually red, sable ( Sable ), fawn, black with fire, only white should not predominate. The nose is black. The ears are erect, medium in size. The cardigan is smart and alert. In his movements he is very fast and agile. It usually develops a deep bond with the dog handler. He needs a loving and consistent training, as it can also be stubborn, and otherwise takes the decisions itself.

Use

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is an excellent companion dog, and can be used as a herding, protection and hunting dog. Dogs who have made good early experiences with children are very child friendly and therefore well suited as a family dog.
