Cardinal de Soubise

François Armand Auguste de Rohan - Soubise ( born December 1, 1717 Paris, † June 28, 1756 in Saverne) was a French prelate and Bishop of Strasbourg.

He was born in Paris, the second son of Jules François de Rohan, Prince de Soubise (1697-1724) and his wife Anne Julie de Melun, Princesse de'Epinoy (1698-1724) on 1 December 1717 and was the great- nephew of Armand Gaston Maximilien de Rohan I. Soubise. He studied theology at the Sorbonne in Paris and became the Prince of Tournon and abbot appointed by Ventadour. In 1736 he was Prince-Abbot of the united monasteries Murbach and Lüders. On September 2, 1740 he was elected to the cathedral chapter of Strasbourg, although he had not yet reached the required age. On December 23, 1741, he was ordained a priest. 1742 following the appointment as Titular Bishop of Tolemaida and at the same time he was elected coadjutor of his great-uncle, with the right to its successor. In 1747 he was promoted to cardinal and eventually took over in 1749 the bishop of Strasbourg.

He died at the age of 38 and was buried in the Collegiate Church of Saverne.

Like his great-uncle, he was admitted to the Académie française in 1741 and took over the 9th chair, had enjoyed before him Charles Armand René de La Trémoille. He was also appointed to the post of the Grand Chaplain of France 1745-1748, one of the prestigious offices in the royal court, and the Office of the Rector of the University of Paris.
