The company was founded in 1971 under the name Cardinal Foods in Columbus, Ohio, by Robert D. Walter as a wholesale grocery business. In 1979 the company acquired the pharmaceutical companies Bailey Drug Company and sold drugs under the name Cardinal Distribution, Incorporated. Cardinal Health sold alongside drugs medical devices and equips hospitals, doctors' surgeries and health centers according to the product range.
