CargoBeamer

CargoBeamer is a horizontal loading system for combined rail transport which allows the fully automatic handling operation in parallel on all cars of a train.

The semi-trailers are hauled by trucks in the JetModule in Cargogate, a special rail loading station. There they are uncoupled, the truck drive away. At a later stage drives a freight train consisting of CargoJet freight cars in the handling facility a. From the bag cart are the JetModule, a kind of trough on which the truck trailer is transported, pushed out to the side. From the other side, the loaded trays are pushed into the wagons. The train is now again ready to leave. The entire handling operation should take 15 minutes according to the manufacturer.

The CargoBeamer is designed primarily for transporting semi -trailers. These make up the bulk of the European truck long distance and it could be for semi-trailers so far prevail, no Transit system. It is also possible in principle swap or ISO containers to transport it.

Pros and Cons

  • The envelope is very fast compared to a crane loading or reach stackers.
  • The system works under catenary
  • Tractor and train must not be at the same time in the terminal
  • The system is compatible with crane terminals, as the wagon essays can be lifted by normal gantry cranes from the cars. This also allows the vast majority of trailers that are not lifted by crane and thus can only be driven on the road, be craned means of the wagon essays on railway wagons.
  • The CargoBeamer gate modules ( terminal equipment ) are 13 m wide lanes plus very efficient for trucks and require less investment at the same throughput as a crane terminal
  • The freight cars are free of electrical and hydraulic systems and thus easier and cheaper than the other cars Horizontal envelope systems
  • The freight cars are heavier than pocket wagon - this drawback is effective especially on routes with high slopes ( mountain ranges )
  • The freight cars are technically complex and expensive than pocket wagon for vertical handling with cranes or carriage of the rolling road

Development

The actual development is complete. The cars are as TSI - compliant approved by the Federal Railway Authority and can be used throughout the EU.

Test operation Leipzig -Hagen

In 2011, a test operation between Leipzig and Hagen took place. Only in Leipzig is a CargoBeamer trade station, and this has only handling modules for three cars. In Hagen, the semi-trailer to be handled with conventional cranes. Nevertheless, non- craneable semi-trailers can be handled because the tubs in which are the semi-trailer, se are lifted by crane.

Pilot route Rotterdam -Riga

The first commercial route will run from Rotterdam to Riga. A special feature here is that come this relation two different track widths used. Instead of a conventional gauging, the freight can be easily transferred from a standard gauge train on a broad gauge at CargoBeamer at the border. This distance is Marco Polo funded by the EU with € 5,415,900 from the II program.

Planned CargoBeamer Stations

Wolfsburg

On the grounds of the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, a pilot terminal is built. Official Construction began on November 29, 2012. The facility is expected in the spring of 2013. The pilot plant will include weekly twelve round trips after Bettembourg ( Luxembourg ).

Hagen- Hengstey

In Hagen - Hengstey is a CargoBeamer trade station on the site of the former marshalling yard Hengstey whose shunting was terminated on 1 February 1976 on the banks of Hengsteysees in planning. This area at the intersection of the Ruhr -Sieg line, the Ruhrtalbahn, the railway Hagen Hamm and the Upper Ruhrtalbahn is connected via the located in the immediate vicinity departure Hagen North of the parallel Federal Highway 1 well connected to the road network. The site is controversial and pushes especially among the residents on concerns since here also a recreation area is planned. A proposed already in the Arnsberg district government planning approval process has been suspended since late 2012.

Mockava

Near the Lithuanian village Mockava a CargoBeamer terminal is built, because there is the only connection the European standard gauge network and the built in Russian broad gauge rail network of the three Baltic states. This terminal will serve the turning over of the JetModule of a standard gauge Cargo beamer on a Breispur - CargoBeamer. This terminal will be built jointly by the German CargoBeamer AG and the Lithuanian Achema Group and should go in the second half of 2012.

Calais

As part of the expansion of the ferry Calais a CargoBeamer terminal is to be built there. This location makes sense, since there are many semi-trailer unaccompanied handled by court tractors ferries. While the city of Calais supports this Umschlagbahnhof, the French rail network operator Réseau Ferré de France blocked the project by refusing the siding.

Legnica

As of spring 2013, a CargoBeamer terminal will be built on the site of the former airport of Legnica. Investor is the Polish bus and train company Pol- Miedź Trans
