Carl Blum

Carl Wilhelm August Blum ( * 1786 in Berlin, † July 2, 1844 in Berlin) was a German singer, stage actor, director, librettist and composer. Blum was a student of Friedrich Adam Hiller and later became court composer Antonio Salieri and the Royal Court Opera in Berlin. In this capacity, he has made himself a name with instrumental music and over 70 stage works.

Carl Blum is often referred to incorrectly as Karl Ludwig Blum in the literature.

Life

Blum first came in 1805 as an actor in Daniel Gottlieb Quandt company on the Rhine, then came as a singer to Königsberg, where he studied composition under Hiller's line, and returned in 1810 to Berlin, where his first opera Claudine von Villa Bella after Goethe's play with applause was performed. In 1817 he brought in Vienna, the opera The Rose hat for the performance, which was 39 times consecutively given and received in 1820, returned to Berlin, for the position of court composer at the city's Royal Theatre. He lingered on for two years in Paris, to study the local stage being, and led after his return several years partly the Director of the Royal Opera, partly the Directorate of King Municipal Theatre.

Blum was a superficial, but cheerful and fertile talent, and his translations and adaptations of foreign plays, and his dramatic original products and musical compositions are fresh, natural and treated with dramatic vividness. His works appeared in part in collective works, so New Stage Games 1828 New Plays in 1830 and theater band 1-4 from 1839 to 1844.

Many of his stage works are arrangements and transfers known French and Italian composers, Blum tried to popularize the Vaudeville in Germany and wrote, among many other pieces " Mirandolina " by Carlo Goldoni's " Locandiera ", " The two Britons " by Merville (Pierre -François Camus Merville, 1785-1853), "I stay single " as well as " The loud mystery " by Carlo Gozzi.

Carl Blum has also left an amazingly extensive chamber music with guitar as well as music for solo guitar, including a guitar school (op. 44 as an appendix to the same ). The partly very high level of difficulty of the works shows him to be excellent guitarist.

For the Viennese soprano Anna Pauline Milder -Hauptmann, who seemed now in Berlin, Blum wrote for their concert tours a great song scene ( with orchestral accompaniment ), which was extremely popular: This " greeting to Switzerland", which alluded directly to one of her most popular roles which merges Emmeline in Joseph Weigl's Singspiel the Swiss family and at the end in a yodel song on a text by Goethe, was for the Milder the model for the composition commission to Franz Schubert, who thereupon his penultimate song the shepherd on the Rock (D 965 ) designed in a similar multi-part system.
