Carlo Gozzi

Carlo Gozzi ( born December 13, 1720 in Venice, † April 4, 1806 in Venice ) was an Italian playwright. He wrote at age 41, his first play The Love for Three Oranges and wrote within the next four years, another nine fairy tale dramas, on which his fame rests to this day. Gozzi wanted to prove in its scenic fairy tale that even convey absurd feats of magic and transformation scenes truth of life and can have dramatic persuasion. He inveighed against Carlo Goldoni and Pietro Chiari, whom he accused of betraying the Commedia dell'arte.

Reception

After initial success Gozzi was forgotten, but was rediscovered in German Romanticism and later in Italian absurd theater. While Friedrich Schiller at the time of incipient romance with his adaptation of Turandot initiated the rediscovery Gozzi, it was Schiller's compatriot, the Schwabe Karl Gustav Vollmoeller that a new translation of Turandot from Italian worried in 1911 and the piece Gozzi for the stage worked. Vollmoeller wrote in his introduction: " Gozzi's work is never dead is a poet and his work has been in his own fatherland forgotten quickly and cruel as Carlo Gozzi. On the stage of the new Italy of his pieces are never published again, not a publisher of his home has dared to attempt reprinted since the expenses of 1772 and 1802. A single work by him has experienced in Italy itself a modern edition - but it is the back -translated into Italian German handling of " Turandot " by Friedrich Schiller " The Austrian writer Otto Zoff brought in 1956, at the Zurich Schauspielhaus, a very nice editing. Gozzi's comedy " The King stag" premiered.

Gozzi's Turandot gained by Karl Gustav Vollmoeller work from 1911 to the Ferruccio Busoni composed the incidental music, again such popularity that Busoni wrote the lyrics and composed their own operatic version. Also Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot not quite finished based on Gozzi's play.

Georg Büchner records in his play Leonce and Lena ( 1838), a parody of Gozzi.

Gozzi's La donna serpente piece was one of the templates to Richard Wagner's first completed opera Die Feen. Sergei Prokofiev set to music 1919 The Love for Three Oranges, Il re cervo was the template for Hans Werner Henze's opera König Hirsch, composed 1953-1956.
