Carl Eduard Hammerschmidt

Karl Eduard Hammerschmidt (later Abdullah Bey ) ( born June 12, 1801 in Vienna, † August 30 1874 in Asia Minor ) was an Austrian mineralogist and entomologist and physician.

Life

Hammerschmidt studied law, but could not get to the legal profession. Although already an editor of the Agricultural newspaper and as an entomologist known he was yet again enroll as a student of medicine. He led numerous ether anesthesia by as early as 1847 and pointed to the benefits of the ether relative to the chloroform out

In the uprising of 1848 involved, he had to flee, joined the Hungarian army, last fought under the Polish general Józef Bem in Transylvania and was crowded with many fellow sufferers over the Turkish border.

From his soon -won position as teacher at the medical school at Constantinople Opel displaced him Complaints Austria.

It was then used in Damascus for several years as a hospital doctor, served as a doctor in the Crimean War, was during the Vienna exhibition of Turkish commissioner and since 1873 teacher of mineralogy and zoology at the medical school at Constantinople Opel, for which he established a natural history museum. He was co-founder of the Turkish Red Crescent.

Besides zoological and geological textbooks in Turkish yielded H. valuable contributions to the geological and zoological knowledge of the Bosphorus areas. He died in the geological investigation of a new railway line in Asia Minor on August 30, 1874.

Hammerschmidt was a member of the Royal Entomological Society of London.

On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Red Crescent, the Islamic College for Social Education in Vienna was also named as Abdullah Karl Hammerschmidt School.
