Carl Geigy

Carl Geigy (* June 24, 1860 in stone in the meadow valley; † January 3, 1943 in Munich stone; Karl ) was a Swiss mechanical engineer and benefactor.

Life

Geigy was the son of the Basel manufacturer Carl (1834-1862) and Margaretha Emilie Burckhardt ( 1838-1911 ). His grandfather was Karl Geigy (1798-1861), President of the Board of the Central Railroad Company. Carl Geigy grew up in Basel, where he attended high school and trade school.

In Lausanne, he was trained as a mechanical engineer and settled in weaving and dyeing School in Bradford educate well. Spinning machinery in a factory in Oldham, where he met the social problems of the working class After a world tour in 1887, he returned back to Switzerland. He was co-founder of the engineering company of Basel. In 1904 he retired from professional life.

Carl Geigy lived on the Bruckgut in Munich stone where it meets the court, " Bruckgut " had built in 1888. In 1897 he married Julia Elizabeth Burckhardt ( 1872-1949 ) of Basel. They had four children, Edward (1899-1941), Julie (1900-1966), Jenny (1903-1990) and Charles Felix ( 1904-1977 ).

After his retirement from the profession he devoted himself to social, humanitarian and religious duties. He was very active in the construction of the Basel Children's Hospital. He was a benefactor and was considered the " father of his country ". He was appointed in Munich stone 1937 an honorary citizen.
