Carl Gottfried Woide

Karl Gottfried Woide ( born July 4, 1725 in Leszno, † May 9, 1790 in London ) was a German - British Orientalist. In England, he was also known as Charles Godfrey Woide.

He studied in Frankfurt an der Oder and suffering and became a pastor of the Socinians in Lissa. In 1750 he was suffering and got by Christian Scholz lessons in Coptic. He lived in England from 1768 until 1790. Since 1770 he was a minister in the Dutch Chapel Royal at St. James 's Palace, and later at the Reformed Church in the Savoy in London. On the recommendation of Bishop Lowth, Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord North, he was sent at the expense of King George III for a few months in the libraries to Paris. He perfected his skills in Sahidic. Published in 1775, the University of Oxford in its own publishing Clarendon Press the lexicon Ægytiaco - Latinum, which had been designed by Maturin Veyssière de La Croze and revised by Christian Scholz. Woide was involved as an editor and provided the work with notes and indices. He summed up the four-volume Grammatica Æegyptica utriusque dialecti by Scholz in a band together, the band appeared at 1778 Clarendon Press under the supervision Woides, the Sahidic section was entirely his work. In 1778 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA ). Since 1782, he was librarian at the British Museum., First in the natural history department, and later in the Department of Printed Books. He was responsible for the Hebrew and Arabic manuscripts. He was one of the first scholars who worked on the Egyptian Sahidic texts. Woide acquired the Dr. Theol. at the University of Copenhagen, since 1785 was a member of the Royal Society, received in 1786 the Doctor of Civil Law from Oxford University. He examined the Codex Alexandrinus and published texts of the New Testament under this Code in 1786. He died on May 9, 1790 of a stroke, leaving two daughters. He had a few pages of the manuscript uncial 070, which are referred to as Fragmentum Woideanum.
