Carl Günther Ludovici

Carl Günther Ludovici (actually Ludewig; * August 7, 1707 in Leipzig, † July 5, 1778 ibid.), Evangelical Lutheran, a German philosopher, lexicographer and economists was.

Life

His father Christian Ludovici (1697-1724), professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig, a theologian and orientalist, was informed by various tutors him since his second year of life. Services

Ludovici devoted himself as a professor at first mainly the presentation and interpretation of the philosophical teachings of Christian Wolff and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, issuing two extensive writings, which sparked heated debate in the scholarly world. They brought him a complaints from professors at the University of Halle, but also led him to a lively correspondence with other scholars of his time.

1739 he was appointed by Johann Heinrich Zedler director of his great universal lexicon and served until 1754 as the main editor of the volumes 19 and 64 and the supplementary volumes 1-4 of this largest German- lexical performance of the 18th century. He introduced a number of innovations in the processing of the lexicon and increased its quality significantly. His prefaces to the volumes 19, 21, 23, and the first volume of the supplements are important lexicographic sources. Even during the editing of the volumes of Zedler 1741-1743 he gave the German translation of the trading lexicon of French Jacques Savary of Bruslons (1622-1690) out. From this work grew a self -earned merchant's Lexicon, whose five volumes began to appear even before the completion of the work at the Zedler 1752 and were completed in 1756. It is the first German -language trade lexicon, which he as the last band still anfügte a systematic outline of this subject area.
