Carl Ludwig Jessen
Carl Ludwig Jessen ( born February 22, 1833 in Deezbüll ( Niebüll ); † January 4, 1917 ) was a Frisian painter. He is known to this day as the " frieze painters ". Its importance lies in the description of the North Frisian peasant culture.
Life
After an apprenticeship in carpentry Jessen worked as a house painter on the marshland farms in North Frisia. 1848-1854 he began self-taught with the portraiture, 1853, he was a joiner and devoted himself entirely to painting. From 1856 to 1865 he studied at the Copenhagen Academy under UN Marstrand. He then returned to North Friesland. With a scholarship, he traveled from 1867 to 1868 to Paris and Italy ( Rome, Ariccia, Rocca di Papa ). 1869-1870 he lived in Klockries, 1871-1875 in Hamburg. He then returned to Deezbüll.
He was the uncle of the painter Benedict Momme Nissen.
