Carl Martin Reinthaler

Carl Martin Rein Thaler also wrote Karl Reinthaler ( born October 13, 1822 in Erfurt, † February 13, 1896 in Bremen ) was a German composer, conductor and director of the cathedral choir in Bremen.

Life

Reinthaler grew up as the son of the theologian and leader of the Christian pure Martinsstifttes Karl Thaler in Erfurt, where he attended the Royal Grammar School. He received his first musical education from later Magdeburg cathedral organist August Gottfried Ritter. From 1841 he studied theology and then music with Adolf Bernhard Marx in Berlin. 1844 to 1849 he was a member of the Sing- Akademie zu Berlin. As the Queen's scholarship, he studied from 1849 to 1853 in Paris and Rome. In 1853 he got a job at the Conservatorium of Music in Coeln. Here he completed his first oratorio Jephtha and his daughter.

From 1857 to 1893 he coined as municipal music director, organist and as director of the Academy of Music, the musical life of the city of Bremen. It led to major orchestral works with success. In 1868, he was instrumental in a rehearsal - involved more complete version of the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, although he then Brahms himself, leaving the musical direction of the show - compared to a part premiere by the Vienna Singing club under Johann von Herbeck extended.

In 1859 he was master of the male voice choir songs " Liedertafel ". From 1868, he was Vice President of the "Bremer artists association". In 1872 he became head of the Bremen cathedral choir. In many of his sacred compositions reveals that his model Moritz Hauptmann was, but he was really too an idiosyncratic musical language, he also proved to be a skillful orchestrator. Critics accused him of a certain one-sidedness, as he rejected, for example, Wagner works. His own works as the opera Edda (1874 ) and Kathy of Heilbronn ( 1881) did not succeed. 1888 was carried out by the Bremen Senate, he was appointed professor. In recent years, he had to use a wheelchair and he could always less participate in the music scene.

Honors

At the revival of the opera Cathy of Heilbronn and the Symphony op 12 showed the Theater Erfurt in 2009 an exhibition on the life and work Reinthalers titled Rediscovered: Carl Reinthaler. Erfurt 1822 - Bremen 1896.

The clean- Straße in Bremen- Schwachhausen and Erfurt were named after him.
