Carl Nieroth

Count Carl Nieroth (* on the estate Anttola at Mikkeli / Finland, year of birth unknown; † January 25, 1712 in the parish Pernå / Finland ) was a Swedish military finland. He was from 1710 to 1712 Swedish Governor-General of Finland.

Military career

Carl Nieroth was born in Finland. He came from an old Livonian nobility. His parents were the lieutenant colonel of the Swedish army Nieroth Otto and his wife Gertrud Baranoff.

Carl Nieroth served in the 1670s in the Swedish army in Pomerania. In 1683 he was elevated to the Swedish knighthood. 1692, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Scanian cavalry and 1700 to Major General.

Great Northern War

With the outbreak of the Great Northern War in 1700, he was distinguished by great military skill. He participated in the daring landing on Zealand, as well as some of the battles on the Western Dvina ( 1701), in Klissov ( 1702) and at Pultusk (1703).

1704 Nieroth was lieutenant general of cavalry in the Swedish army. In 1705 he was commander of the Swedish troops in Warsaw, and oversaw the election of King Stanislaus. On July 21, 1705 Nieroth won as commander of the Scanian cavalry a decisive victory over the Saxon- Polish troops under the command of Otto Arnold Paykull and insurgents in the Battle of Rakowitz near Warsaw.

1705 Carl returned Nieroth highly decorated back to Sweden. A year later he was appointed Baron and Count. He was entrusted with the position of the commander for southern Sweden.

Finland

1710 appointed by the Swedish King Charles XII. Nieroth the Swedish governor-general in Finland with extensive powers for the military and civilian leadership of the country. On September 23, 1710, he was in Turku. He immediately had the fortifications around the country to expand and set up a people's militia.

After losing to Russia Wyborgs Nieroth got the military mission to retake the city. However, in 1711 the siege failed to lack of equipment. Nieroth died unexpectedly on January 25, 1712 in the parish Pärna.
