Carl Schmidt (Coptologist)

Carl Schmidt ( born August 26, 1868 in Hagenow, † April 17, 1938 in Cairo ), also sometimes unofficially dubbed among colleagues as Copts -Schmidt, was a German Koptologe.

1887 Carl Schmidt began studying classical philology as well as the Hebrew and comparative linguistics in Leipzig. Within a year, he moved to Berlin, where he was led by Adolf Harnack to patristic and early Christian literature. The Egyptologist Adolf Erman and Georg Steinsdorff were also influential. Steinsdorff gave him the Coptic language. His doctorate was on the Codex Brucianus, followed on the course other publications. Harnack quickly recognized the special abilities Schmidt and encouraged his students and postgraduates, as far as it went. Nevertheless, Schmidt's professional future was long uncertain. In 1899 he qualified as a professor of church history " Plotinus position Gnosticism and Christianity church ". By Harnack's support, he was in 1900 scientific officer of the Church Fathers Commission.

Around 1900, had an altercation with Schmidt Wilhelm Spiegelberg and Adolf Jacobi on the Strasbourg Coptic papyrus. Schmidt criticized the attempted reconstruction of Spiegelberg and Jacobi sharp and was supported by Harnack, who had given the opinion Schmidts in order. Spiegelberg and Jacobi in turn imputed Schmidt personal motives. The dispute escalated, but was reassured by Theodor Mommsen again.

The Fathers of the Church Commission charged Schmidt with the release of Codex and the Pistis Sophia Brucianus. For the launch of the now badly damaged Codex Brucianus Schmidt had access to the transcripts of Karl Gottfried Woide and Moritz God Help Schwartze, which arose when the Codex was in better condition. He published the Acts of Peter and the Acts of Paul. In 1909 he became associate professor at the University of Berlin in 1921 and 1928 Honorary Professor Associate Professor of Church History, and Coptic language and literature. Schmidt was with Harnack editor of texts and studies. Carl Schmidt also worked Manichaean manuscripts and played an important role in the acquisition of Coptic manuscripts of the Berlin Papyrus Collection, including the Codex Berolinensis Gnosticus 8502nd Schmidt was a member of the German Oriental Society and the Society of Church History.
