Carl Sigismund Kunth

Karl Sigismund Kunth ( born June 18, 1788 in Leipzig, † March 22, 1850 in Berlin) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Kunth ".

Kunth spent 24 years of his working life so that samples collected Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland on their trip to South America to evaluate.

Life

Born in Leipzig, he learned an employee of a Berlin merchant, Alexander von Humboldt know that sparked his interest in botany and helped him to be able to attend courses at the University in Berlin. Previously, he attended the Thomas School in Leipzig.

From 1813 to 1819 he studied at the Paris Muséum national d' histoire naturelle and cultivated relationships with French botanists. There he worked on the analysis and classification of samples from the Humboldt's collection, with whom he shared an apartment. With his work Nova genera et species plantarum quas in peregrinatione ad plagam aequinoctialem orbis novi collegerunt Bonpland et Humboldt, he was one of the first who categorized the flora of the American continent.

In 1820 he returned to Berlin, was Professor of Botany at the University and Vice - Director of the Botanic Garden. Kunth in 1829 was inducted into the Academy of Sciences and embarked on a three-year trip to South America, which led him to Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Central America and the Caribbean.

1850 Kunth took in the face of a long, painful suffering life.

After his death, the Prussian government bought in 1850 to his botanical collection. It was later affiliated to the Botanical Garden in Berlin.
