Carl von Voit

Carl von Voit ( born October 31, 1831 in Amberg, † January 31, 1908 in Munich) was a German physiologist and nutritionist.

Life

Voit studied after leaving grammar school in 1848 at the ( present ) Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich until 1854 in Munich and Würzburg Medicine, Habilitation 1857 at the University of Munich in 1860 and an associate from 1863 full professor of physiology and physiological conservator of the collection. In 1885 he was appointed Obermedizinalrat.

Carl von Voit is considered the founder of modern dietetics. The chemist and physiologist proved that the amount of nitrogen in the urine is a measure of protein turnover. He was using the respiration chamber to characterize the importance of individual nutrients for human consumption closer and put the Voit'sche Kostmaß on. Voit was also very successful as a teacher, the Munich school moved the world to students. In particular, the nutritional science of the USA here received her early imprinting. In Germany Max Rubner was the most famous pupil Voits. Another student was Otto Frank.

The German Nutrition Society lends since 1961, Carl von Voit Medal to deserving nutrition researchers.

V. Voit was since 1849 a member of the Corps Franconia Munich.
