Carla-Bayle

Carla- Bayle is a commune with 786 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and former Huguenot stronghold in the department of Ariège in the Midi-Pyrénées region. In the last years an artists' colony has settled that characterizes the place highly.

Geography

Carla- Bayle is located about 50 km from Toulouse in the northeast of the department of Ariège on a rocky outcrop. To the west of the village is the 15 -acre lake of Carla- Bayle.

History

In Gallo -Roman times there was an oppidum in the territory of the present municipality.

The first written mention of the village dates from the year 960 when the bishop of Toulouse the place to the Count of Carcassonne was. In the 11th century belonged to the county of Foix Carla who had a palace built there in the 12th century. In the 13th century by the building of the church, the place was surrounded by a city wall and into a fortress.

After the Albigensian Crusade was called the place Castlardo and reported directly to the king of France. Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), philosopher of the Enlightenment, was born in the former Carla- le -Comte.
