Carlo Contarini

Carlo Contarini, ( born July 5, 1580 Venice, † May 1, 1656 ibid ) was from 1655 to 1656 100th Doge of Venice.

Carlo was the son of Andrea Contarini and Elisabetta Morosini. From his marriage with Paula Loredan went forth among other things the later procurator of San Marco Andrea Contarini. Carlo Contarini was elected on March 27, 1655 after 68 ballots for the hundredth Doge of Venice.

When he was barely ten days old, his father died. As the heir to a large fortune and a respected name, he held numerous positions. At the age he had already retired into private life. When, after numerous ballots no candidate won a majority, Carlo was chosen as a compromise candidate. After 30 months in office he died on 1 May 1656.
