Francesco Cornaro (Doge)

Francesco Cornaro, also called Francesco Corner, (* 1575, † 1656) was the 101st Doge of Venice. Corner was chosen at the age of 81 years after 26 ballots. His reign from 17 May to 5 June 1656 and was the shortest of a Venetian Doge.

Family

The Corner among the oldest families in Venice and brought their family tree back to the Romans. They were one of the richest families in the city and had gained their wealth primarily through money lending. They made a total of 4 Doge Francesco except the Doge Marco Corner, Corner I. Giovanni and Giovanni Corner II, grandson of Francesco. He was the fourth of five sons of the Doge Giovanni Cornaro I. and Chiara Dolfin. From his marriage with Andriana Priuli at least five sons were born.

The reputation of the family in Venice in the 17th century was still damaged because of the shameless favoritism of the two joined together sparkled Dogenfamilien Priuli and Corner and for criminal activities of individual family members in the 30s.

Francesco Cornaro was buried in the family chapel of San Nicola da Tolentino in Cornaro.
