Tolentini

San Nicola da Tolentino called I Tolentini is a church in Venice in the Santa Croce district near the Piazzale Roma. Patron of the Church of St. Nicholas of Tolentino.

History

San Nicola is the church of the same convent at Rio I Tolentini in Venice. After the Sack of Rome in 1527 was the founder of Theatines, Gaetan di Thiene, fled from Rome to Venice and had received the Monastery of San Nicola for his monastic community by the Senate. The Theatines engaged in Venice in caring for the poor, nursing and particularly as a helper during the plague epidemic of 1528th

The church was built by Vincenzo Scamozzi 1591-1602. Between 1706 and 1714 the pronaos was with pediment to the design Andrea Tiralis. The transept of the church was originally überkuppelt. The dome collapsed, however, soon after its completion, and was replaced by a flat roof over the dome drum with a painted illusionistic dome of Gerolamo Mengozzi Colonna. During the bombardment of the city in 1849 by Austrian troops also I Tolentini came under fire. A cannon ball penetrated the ceiling, lay in front of the main altar and was fitted later as a souvenir in the facade.

The former convent building the Tolentiner, 1956-68 modernized by Daniele Calabi and provided with an input of Carlo Scarpa is today the seat of the Faculty of Architecture ( IUAV ), University of Venice.

Architecture

Scamozzi Longitudinalbau with side chapels and domed transept is based on Palladio's concept for a modern church, which corresponded to the Tridentine requirements for a modern church and the Palladio had already run in the Redentore and San Giorgio Maggiore.

The unadorned facade of brick masonry is a large temple-like portico in front with six Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment decorated with an ornamental cross oval oculus. It was built by Andrea Tirali 1706-1714.

The campanile of the church from the early 18th century is 47 m high. About the open with four Biforienfenstern belfry rises an octagonal drum with a copper- covered onion dome.

Interior decoration

The painting of the church dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Unlike Palladio's churches of San Nicola is richly decorated with stucco, frescoes, paintings and a strongly colored marble floor. The altar was created by Baldassare Longhena.

An altar paintings, the church hosts a "St. Lorenzo " by Bernardo Strozzi, the painting " St. Jerome surrounded by angels " by Johann Liss, and paintings by Palma il Giovane and Padovanino. The illusionist Kuppelfresco is a work of Gaetano Zompini.

The baroque organ of the church is attributed to the Croatian- Italian organ builder Pietro Nacchini ( 1694-1769 ). It is almost intact in their original condition.

In I Tolentini the Doge Giovanni Cornaro I., Francesco Cornaro, Giovanni II Cornaro and Paolo Renier were buried. The Bernini inspired, magnificent tomb of Cardinal Francesco Morosini in 1683, is a work of the Genoese sculptor Filippo Parodi.
