Bernardo Strozzi

Bernardo Strozzi (* 1581 in Genoa; † August 2, 1644 in Venice), called il Prete Genovese and il Cappuccino, was an Italian painter of the Baroque.

Life

From 1598, he was Capuchin monk, from 1610 secular priest, 1630 in Venice.

After a mission to portray Claudio Monteverdi, his fame grew and he made a name for himself as il prete Genovese ( the Genoa priest ). Therefore His portrait paintings depict many of the contemporary Venetian. His works can be seen today in many museums in the world.

Services

Strozzi is one of the most important representatives of colorism in the 17th century. His work is a merging of numerous stylistic influences: while was a formative model for his altarpieces Caravaggio, he won for his genre paintings numerous suggestions in the Flemish Pieter Aertsen, Rubens and van Dyck. The lightened his palette colorism in the Venetian years has been ahead on Tiepolo.
