Carlo Grossi

Carlo Grossi (* 1634 in Vicenza, † May 14 1688 in Venice) was an Italian composer and organist.

Carlo Grossi spent part of his formative years in Modena. He was before 1657 Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Reggio Emilia. Between 1657 and 1662 Grossi had several appointments in Vicenza, he was maestro at the cathedral in 1656, the bandmaster of the Olympic Academy. From 1664 to 1667 Grossi worked as organist and maestro di canto at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice. In these years, to 1666, he was also the bass on St. Mark's Basilica. From 1676 until his, death, he was maestro di musica at the Ospedale dei Derelitti He tried in vain senior positions at St. Mark's Basilica and the cappella musicale at San Petronio in Bologna. The Venetian monthly Pallade Veneta designated Carlo Grossi in a post in 1687 as a " Orfeo our time." For a time, Grossi was an honorary maestro di cappella of the Duke of Mantua, to whom he dedicated several sacred cantatas and motets, as well as a Christmas Pastorale. There is evidence that Carlo Grossi had contacts with musicians in Dresden, Innsbruck and Vienna, but no evidence whether he has ever visited a place. Among his pupils was Antonio Giannettini.

Grossi style is characterized by a certain simplicity in comparison to that of his contemporaries. He pulled homophony and uncomplicated melody at a time when the preferred polyphony and virtuoso passages. In his secular works, there are comic elements, rather illustrate the satirical intent. In August 1677 referred to an output of the Paris of Le Mercure Galant, its carnival opera " Nicomede in Bitinia " as " Très excellent", mainly because Grossi fine taste and his compositional skills. In many of his works, the influence of Massimiliano Neri is noticeable, especially in the sonatas of op.1 and in the instrumental passages of his stage works.
