Carlos Colón, Sr.

Carlos Colón (actually Carlos Edwin Colón Gonzalez, born July 18, 1948 in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican wrestling organizer and former professional wrestler.

Life

Colón grew up with six siblings in the rural south of Puerto Rico. 1961 emigrated with his family to the United States. In Brooklyn, he began wrestling training in February 1966 and was allowed to make his first match in Boston against Bobo Brazil. Colón moved to Montreal and wrestled in the following years in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (now WWE, then located in the northeast of the USA), in Oregon and in Canada, where he was the first gain title at Stampede Wrestling.

World Wrestling Council

1973 Colón returned back to Puerto Rico. The local wrestling was dominated at that time by the L & G Promotion of originating from Florida promoter Clarence Luttrell, who worked almost exclusively with American wrestlers. Colón recognized the gap in the market that offered by wrestling shows with local wrestlers and founded together with Victor Jovica and Robert James Marella, whom he knew from his time in the WWWF, Capitol Sports Promotions. As the World Wrestling Council, they organized wrestling shows with Puerto Rican wrestlers like José Miguel Pérez, Hércules Ayala and Colon himself, who was the real showpiece of the WWC with a total of 65 championship titles. To do this, benefited from regular well-known guest stars such as Bruiser Brody, Abdullah the Butcher, Randy Savage or Harley Race, attracted his match against Colón in October 1983 32.000 spectators. Two months later, he defeated Ric Flair for the NWA World Title, but this was not recognized outside of the Caribbean and was crowned on the Universal Champion. Especially famous Colón was but with his matches with Abdullah the Butcher, who were among the bloodiest of the time. Overall, he was wearing more than 70 scars. As a promoter Colon began to roll after Bruiser Brody was stabbed to death as a result of a dispute from Booker José Gonzales and the WWC prevented an investigation of the case. Thereafter avoided numerous U.S. wrestlers league. However, it was possible to stabilize the league.

Family

Carlos Colón's sons Edwin Jr. and Carlos Edwin, his daughter Stacy and his nephew Orlando were all in his footsteps and could also celebrate numerous in the World Wrestling Council title wins. He himself ended his career solemnly at the anniversary event of the WWC on 19 July 2008.
