Carlos Eddé

Carlos Eddé (* 1956; Arab كارلوس إدة ) is a Lebanese politician. Since 2000 he is the chairman of the Lebanese National Bloc and successor of his uncle Raymond Eddé. His election came as a surprise, because Carlos Eddé lived since 1976 in Brazil and at the time barely spoke Arabic. Since 2004, he participated in the opposition movement. Eddé was involved in the unification of the opposition to the common strategy that led to the withdrawal of the Syrians from Lebanon. In the parliamentary elections in Lebanon in 2005, he ran unsuccessfully for the seat of the Maronite community in Byblos, a longtime stronghold of his party and defeated the candidate of the Free Patriotic Movement clearly. Politically, he has spoken out against the influence of religion in Lebanese politics and submitted a draft law to reform the complicated electoral system. He rejects the Syrian interference and supports the call for the disarmament of Hezbollah.
