Carmel (singer)

Carmel (* November 24, 1958 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England) is the stage name of British singer Carmel McCourt and also the name of their band, which also includes bassist Jim Parris, and drummer Gerry Darby.

History of the band

The group was founded in 1981 in Manchester. 1982 6 -track LP " Carmel " was released on the Red Flame label. In 1983 they achieved with their first major album " The Drum Is Everything " and the resulting coupled- singles " Bad Day " and " More More More " top 25 success in the singles chart. In 1984, the trio at the Jazz Festival in the Italian Messina price as a jazz musician of the year. However, commercial successes came only in the second half of the 80s one, as Carmel began to emphasize the pop side of their music stronger. "Sally" from the album " The Falling ", one of their most successful pieces, dates from this period.

Carmel has received, among others also with the French singer Johnny Hallyday in 1986 in a duet entitled J'oublierai ton nom, and attended the Sanremo Festival together with Italian singer Rossana Casale and the title Terra 1991.

However, the use of producers Brian Eno did not produce the subsequent album, " Set me free " the hoped-for breakthrough. In 1992, the band released the album "Good news". Carmel's last studio album, " World 's gone crazy" is from the year 1995. Published with "Live at Ronnie Scott's " Carmel 1998 recording of a London concert in December 1997. Since 2001/2002 Carmel McCourt and Jim Paris playing together again as Carmel and appear regularly in the UK. Music style

Carmel's music moves on the border between pop and jazz, but also frequently experimented with related styles such as soul, blues, gospel, rhythm and blues and reggae. As a live act they could, as well as its most perfect background choir, show their singing skills well with their sonorous contralto. Here also the instrumentation of her pieces always had a clear affinity for jazz, as double bass, wind instruments ( in particular saxophone, Hornet, trumpets ) and percussion were used accordingly. Their music was the late 80s as " Cool" and was played in the clubs and trendy cocktail bars alternating with plates of Sade and Matt Bianco.
