Carmo Convent (Lisbon)

The Convento do Carmo is a former monastery of the Carmelite Order in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. It was built in the years 1389-1423 on a vow of Marshal Nuno Álvares Pereira out. The building complex includes the church Igreja do Carmo, which is considered a fine specimen of the Lisbon Gothic.

In the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755, the building was destroyed. Initiated by Queen Mary restoration came after the secularization of the monastic order of 1834 to a halt after only one wing of the monastery was prepared again. There, now home to the headquarters of the Portuguese National Guard. In the ruins of the abbey church, the Archaeological Museu do Carmo is housed. In the roofless nave also concerts are held in the summer time due to the excellent acoustics.

From Rossio and Santa Justa (also called Elevador do Carmo ) falls today's ruins immediately apparent.
