Santa Justa Lift

The Santa Justa, also called Elevador do Carmo, is a passenger elevator which connects the Baixa with the higher Chiado district in the city center of Lisbon. The distinctive steel structure was built in 1902 according to plans of the engineer, Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard. The original drive was a steam engine, but this was replaced in 1907 by electric motors.

The elevator is 45 m high and has two original wooden decorated and equipped with glass panels and brass fittings cabins that can each hold 24 people. One floor above the upper output are to see the two original lift machines in operation. Again a floor above is a café with spectacular views over the city: Baixa, Chiado, Castelo de São Jorge.

Many years of construction work at the upper outlet made a departure from the Elevadors to Largo do Carmo out impossibly long, and it was used at this time only as a viewing platform. Since the re-opening of the connecting web in December 2005 it can be used again in the original sense.
