Carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase

The carnitine - acylcarnitine transporter ( CACT ) is the one protein that catalyzes the counter- transport of L- carnitine from, or acylcarnitine in the mitochondrion. This reaction is part of fat metabolism, and thus, the combustion (beta- oxidation ) of the transporting fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix to begin. It is a transporter from the class of mitochondrial carriers. Mutations in the SLC25A20 gene can cause ( rare ) CACT deficiency, which is in serious cases shortly after birth fatal.

The transport equation is:

It is an antiport.
