Caroline Amalie of Augustenburg

Was; († March 9, 1881 at Amalienborg Palace born June 28, 1796 in Copenhagen) as the second wife of King Christian VIII of Denmark, Queen Caroline Amalie of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Augustenburg.

Life

Caroline Amalie was the daughter of Duke Friedrich Christian of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Augustenburg and Louise Auguste of Denmark, the daughter of the Danish King Christian VII

She married Christian VIII on May 22, 1815 after his divorce from his first wife in 1810 and after his abdication as King of Norway in 1814. Her husband was able to devote the sciences in this period, notably the mineralogy and geology, Caroline Amalie distinguished himself as a composer and wrote many piano pieces. In the years 1818-1822 she undertook at the side of her husband traveled extensively throughout Europe. After the death of his cousin Frederick VI. ascended Christian VIII in 1839 the Danish throne and Caroline Amalie was until his death in 1848, Queen of Denmark. Their marriage remained childless.

She was busy with many social and humanitarian projects, as through the establishment and support of charitable institutions (such as patron of asylum on Neuendeich ). As Augustenburgerin it was considered in the conflicts with Schleswig -Holstein in Denmark with skepticism, was in later years but extremely popular. Interested in religious matters, they became an important promoter of Grundtvigianismus.
