Carrizozo is a town in Lincoln County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 1036 inhabitants ( 2000) and the county seat ( county seat ) of Lincoln County.

Geography

The city lies at the intersection of U.S. Highway 54 with U.S. Highway 380 in the west of the county in south-central New Mexico and has a total area of 7.0 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,036 people in 435 households and 264 families. The population density was 147.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 74.81 % White, 0.68 % African American, 1.83 % Native American, 0.10 % residents of the Pacific island region.

Of the 435 households out of which 23.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.30 % were married couples living together, 12.40% had a female householder with no husband, and 39.10 % were non-families, 35.60 % of all households are made and 18.90 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.79.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 20.90 % under the age of 18, 5.30 % from 18 to 24, 24.80 % from 25 to 44 years, 27.50% between 45 and 64 years and 21.40% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 107.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 103.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 22,647, and the median income for a family was $ 29,625. Males have a median income of $ 24,583, women $ 17,708. The per capita income was $ 12,243. 21.00% of families and 26.80 % of the population were below the poverty line.
