U.S. Route 54

U.S. Highway 54 is a highway in the United States, (1926 kilometers) from El Paso in far West Texas leads in east-west direction is about 1197 miles up to Illinois. It runs on two sections through the largest state in the contiguous states. The Union Pacific Railroad owned railroad from El Paso to Wichita in Kansas runs along its entire length parallel to this highway.

History

U.S. Highway 54 was dedicated in 1926. By 1972, the route led further east to Chicago. Today, this stretch is part of the U.S. Highway 36 to Illinois State Route 54 and U.S. Highway 45

Course

New Mexico

Coming from Texas reached U.S. 54 New Mexico in Chaparral. In this area, the highway comes to military significance, since it connects Fort Bliss in El Paso to Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo. U.S. 54 leads almost to the north through the center of the state, about Tularosa after Carrizozo, where U.S. Highway 380 crosses. From then on, the direction changes in a several hundred kilometers long arc gradually to the northeast. After about 130 km U.S. 54 Vaughn reached the crossroads to U.S. Highway 60 and U.S. Highway 285 about 65 km to cross the highway to the Pecos River and reached in Santa Rosa Interstate 40, U.S. 54 replaced at 95 km in length to Tucumcari. Texas

After U.S. 54 on the border between the United States and Mexico in El Paso has its starting point, the highway runs initially as a multi-lane freeway in a south-north direction along the eastern flank of the Franklin Mountains. After 23 miles ( 37 km) crosses the highway the state line into New Mexico, by 354 miles ( about 570 miles) later behind Nara Visa north of the Canadian Rivers return to Texan territory.

This second 95 miles (about 153 km) long section leads in a northeasterly direction through the Texas Panhandle and touched the places Dalhart - here cross U.S. Highway 87 and U.S. Highway 385 - and Stratford, with the intersection of U.S. Highway 287

Oklahoma

U.S. 54 crosses the Oklahoma Panhandle in a northeasterly direction. The road comes to Oklahoma near Texhoma, Texas and performs Guymon and Hooker, before intersecting the border to Kansas shortly before Liberal.

Kansas

U.S. 54 reaches Kansas in Seward County and leads to Plains, where a common portion of U.S. Highway 160 begins, which extends to the east of Meade. From then leads Route 54 northeast through the Ford County. From Mullinville the highway passes over a greater distance - 143 miles - in common with U.S. Highway 400

The route runs through the rural areas of the county Greenwood and Wilson. After Fort Scott swivels U.S. 77 north to Junction City and U.S. 54 east leaves Kansas in Bourbon County to Missouri.

Missouri

The Route 54 crosses Missouri diagonally from the southwest to the northeast corner. She is one of the main routes through the Ozarks and the main access road to the Pomme de Terre Lake and Lake of the Ozarks.

The route initially contacts Nevada, El Dorado Springs and Hermitage before north of Ha Ha Tonka State Park crosses the Lake of the Ozarks for the first time. About Eldon reached the Highway Jefferson City, where the Missouri River is crossed on a common portion of U.S. Highway 63. Immediately after the Jefferson City Bridge branches off from 54 to Fulton, then crosses in Kingdom City Interstate 70 and eventually reached over Mexico and Vandalia eventually the Mississippi River in Louisiana and thus the state line into Illinois.

Illinois
