Tularosa is a village in Otero County in the U.S. state of New Mexico.

Geography

At a distance of 15 kilometers north of Tularosa Alamogordo is the county seat. About 110 kilometers away is south-west of Las Cruces. The road connecting U.S. Highway 54 reaches the location of the north and meets here on the coming of East U.S. Highway 70 Together they run then to the south. In the east, the Sacramento Mountains are located.

History

Tularosa gets its name from Spanish settlers who went through barren desert areas and were looking for a drinking place. When they found growing on the water Schoenoplectus acutus Teichbinsenart, referred to in the Spanish language as Tule and tan to pink colored (Spanish also pink ) flowers are borne, they settled there and named the place Tularosa. Since pink in Spanish as " Rose" means to the designated place that actually also like to adorn themselves with blooming roses, now sometimes referred to as the City of Roses ( City of Roses ), and judge every year in May a Rose Festival from (Rose Festival). The official founding as Village of Tularosa was held in 1863. As a result, the congregation grew and were built architecturally valuable buildings. 1979, the Tularosa Original Townsite District with the Saint Francis de Paula Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Tularosa, following an ancient tradition still known for the production of Adobe and active in tourism as a starting point for tours to the nearby White Sands National Monument.

Demography

In 2012 a population of 2943 persons was determined, which represents an increase of 2.8 % over the year 2000. The average age of the residents was 42.8 years in 2012, slightly below the average of New Mexico, which was 45.5 years.

59.3 % of today's residents are Hispanic, and 2.7 % Native American origin. Other immigrant groups during the beginnings of the town came to 8.5% in England and 8.2% in Germany.
