Ford County (Kansas)

Ford County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Dodge City.

Geography

The County is located in the central southwestern Kansas, is located in the south about 55 miles from Oklahoma and has an area of 2847 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hodgeman County, Edwards County, Kiowa County, Clark County, Meade County and Gray County.

History

Ford County was formed on March 6, 1873 from parts of Marion County and the free territory. It was named after James H. Ford, an officer in the American Civil War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Ford County by 32,458 people in 10,852 households and 7856 families in Ford County. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 74.85 percent White, 1.62 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 2.05 percent Asian, 0.12 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 18.17 percent from other races groups; 2.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 37.68 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,852 households out of which 40.9 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers and 27.6 percent were non-families. 22.7 percent of all households were single-person households and 9.5 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.42 persons.

31.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.2 percent of 18 to 24 years 29.4 percent between 25 and 44, 17.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 107.2 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 years or 105.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,860, and the median income for a family was $ 42,734. Males have a median income of $ 27,189, women $ 22,165. The per capita income was $ 15,721. 9.9 percent of families and 12.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
