Smith County (Kansas)

Smith County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Smith Center.

Geography

The County is centrally located in the north of Kansas, bordering Nebraska and has an area of ​​2322 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Jewell County, Osborne County, Rooks County and Phillips County.

History

The first Homestead Act, signed in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln, was applied to this area in 1871 and 3800 brought residents to 1875. Smith County was formed in 1872. It was named after Nathan Smith, a general of the 2nd Colorado volunteers in the American Civil War. 1875, three years after the formation of the county, lived here already 3800 people. 1889, the population had grown to 15,000. Main economic activity was the cultivation of wheat. After several plagues of locusts, which destroyed the entire harvest, the population began to decline slowly but steadily from 1900.
