Gove County, Kansas

Gove County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Gove City. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Kansas and has an area of 2775 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Sheridan County, Graham County, Trego County, Ness County, Scott County, Logan County and Thomas County.

History

Gove County was formed on 2 March 1868 as original county of free territory. It was named after Grenville L. Gove, an officer in the American Civil War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Gove County 3,068 people in 1,245 households, and 861 families in Gove County. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.95 percent White, 0.10 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, and 0.72 percent from other races; 0.98 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,245 households out of which 28.4 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 63.5 percent were married couples living together, 3.5 percent were single mothers and 30.8 percent were non-families. 29.7 percent of all households were single-person households and 17.5 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01.

26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.4 percent 18 to 24 years 22.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 22.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 92.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,510, and the median income for a family was $ 40,438. Males have a median income of $ 26,863, women $ 21,357. The per capita income was $ 17,852. 8.0 percent of families and 10.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
