Sheridan County (Kansas)

Sheridan County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hoxie. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Kansas, is located in the north about 45 miles from Nebraska and has an area of 2322 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Decatur County, Norton County, Graham County, Gove County and Thomas County.

History

Sheridan County was formed on 1880. It was named after Phillip H. Sheridan, a Lieutenant General of the Northern states during the American Civil War.

According to the census of 2000, there were 2813 people in Sheridan County. Of these, 44 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 1124 households, and 795 families in the Sheridan County. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.7 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, 0.1 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.4 percent from other races groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.5 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1124 households out of which 30.4 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 63.8 percent were married couples living together, 4.5 percent were single mothers and 29.2 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent of all households were single-person households and 14.8 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.01.

26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years 23.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 20.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 95.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,547, and the median income for a family was $ 38,292. Males have a median income of $ 26,351, women $ 16,250. The per capita income was $ 16,299. 12.0 percent of families and 15.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
