Washington County (Kansas)
Washington County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Washington.
Geography
The County is located in northeast Kansas, Nebraska and bordered to the north has an area of 2328 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Marshall County, Riley County, Clay County, Cloud County and Republic County.
History
Washington County was formed in 1873. It was named after George Washington, the first U.S. president.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Washington County 6483 people in 2673 households and 1780 families in Washington County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.90 percent White, 0.11 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, and 0.09 percent from other races; 0.51 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.65 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.4 percent 18 to 24 years 22.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 25.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 97.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,363, and the median income for a family was $ 37,260. Males had a median income of $ 25,074, women $ 18,000. The per capita income was $ 15,515. 7.3 percent of families and 10.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
