Montgomery County (Kansas)
The Montgomery County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Independence.
Geography
The County is located in southeast Kansas, in the south as Oklahoma, is in the east about 80 miles from Missouri and has an area of 1687 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Wilson County, Neosho County, Labette County, Chautauqua County and Elk County.
History
Montgomery County was formed on 26 February 1867. It was named after Richard Montgomery, an Irish- American major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, which in the attempted capture of Quebec City in Canada, died in 1775 after two forts and the city of Montreal has already been taken. According to him, five cities, 15 counties, a warship and a university have been named.

According to the census of 2000, there were 36 252 people in Montgomery County. Of these, 900 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 14 903 households and 9955 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 85.77 percent White, 6.07 percent African American, 3.19 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.13 percent from other races groups; 3.34 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.08 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14 903 households out of which 29.8 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 53.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers and 33.2 percent were non-families. 29.7 percent of all households were single-person households and 14.7 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.6 percent 18 to 24 years 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 18.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 88.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,997, and the median income for a family was $ 38,516. Males have a median income of $ 29,745, women $ 20,179. The per capita income was $ 16,421. 9.2 percent of families and 12.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
