Russell County (Kansas)

Russell County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Russell.

Geography

The County is located just north-west of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of 2328 square kilometers, of which 37 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Osborne County, Lincoln County, Ellsworth County, Barton County, Rush County and Ellis County.

History

Russell County was formed on 26 February 1867. It was named for Alva P. Russell, an officer in the American Civil War.

According to the census of 2000, there were 7370 people in Russell County. Of these, 209 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 3207 households and 2020 families in Russell County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.58 percent White, 0.50 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.27 percent from other races groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3207 households out of which 25.4 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 53.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers and 37.0 percent were non-families. 32.8 percent of all households were single-person households and 16.8 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.83 persons.

22.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.8 percent 18 to 24 years 23.3 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 24.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 88.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,284, and the median income for a family was $ 40,355. Males had a median income of $ 25,916, women $ 17,957. The per capita income was $ 17,073. 9.1 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
