Importance

Cartel pioneered the use of traditional Turkish music instruments in the rap field. Also known as interpreters of a modernized form of Gurbet Türküleri they take an exposed position. In Turkey, there had also been no rap and hip hop scene practically in front of the success of the band, which Cartels influence must be described as stylistically there even: "The Turkish scene was influenced by this style so blatant that even today have not yet recovered from it and still the same vorjaulen Shit ", it nevertheless provides the German -Turkish rappers Fuat also quite critical. "It is in Turkey, two, three rappers make something innovative. Everyone else (...), just the imitation, a super bad black white copy of Cartel. "

Reasons for the success

The Islamic scholar Maria Wurm sees its publication in music in the migration. Observations on the cultural articulation of Turkish youth in Germany (2006 ) on the treatment of Turkish immigrants living situations of young people in the texts of the group as a major reason for the success Cartels in Germany. In Turkey, the band was in the opinion worm rather " because they came from the West and even more because it represented something Steam, which was recognized in the West" so successful. A particular success of the German Turks in the nationalist circles in Turkey, however, was based on a cross-cultural misunderstanding: "Songs like Türksün (English: You are a Turk ) were meant as an invitation to be more confident to migrants living in Germany adolescents Direct transfer of such texts in one. but Turkey Turkish context brought very different implications with and met in Turkey a nationalist nerve " ( worm). With a sampler contribution against racism Cartel fought to 1996, even against such a one-sided political appropriation. 1998, after the dissolution of the band, also another single was released this regard encounters with the German musician Peter Maffay under the name Cartel, but actually had only Erci E. at this with.
