The Schwarzfleckige Gold Dickkopffalter ( Carterocephalus silvicola ) is a butterfly of the family of the skipper ( Hesperiidae ). The specific epithet silvicola - Latin for inhabitants of the forests - is comparable with agricola - Latin for farmer - to consider as a noun in apposition, the ending is not adjusted (see IRZN Article 30.1.4 ).

Features

The forewing length is twelve to 13 millimeters. The front upper wing surface is bright yellow with large brown black Diskal and small Submarginalflecken. The hind wings are basically brown colored black with yellow spots, which are arranged like the yellow throws leagues Dickkopffalter and with an additional spot on the Costa. The underside is very similar to the upside. The female has slightly larger spots and a dark basal region and a dark outer edge.

The caterpillars have grown grass green with pale back and side back lines. They grow to about 25 millimeters long. For wintering the caterpillars change color to gray yellow. They overwinter as full-grown caterpillars.

The pupa is pale yellow with brown stripes.

Geographic occurrence and habitat

The Schwarzfleckige Gold Dickkopffalter is common in East Germany, Denmark, Fennoscandia and northern Europe through Siberia to the Amur, Kamchatka and Japan. In Scandinavia it occurs to the Arctic Circle, in western Siberia to the Taimyr peninsula. Previously, the incidence ranged south to the Czech Republic; he has died there. In Eastern Europe, the southernmost occurrence in Ukraine. The moth is found in the lowlands in open woods, moist, sunny forest clearings and in bushy places. In East Germany, the species is also frequently found along grassy causeways in bog and swamp forests. It comes from 0 prior to about 200 m above sea level.

Way of life
