Carúpano

Carúpano on the map of Venezuela

Carúpano is a city on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela, in the state of Sucre. It is located about 120 kilometers east of Cumana, the state capital. Carúpano has about 170,000 inhabitants; them because of the university ( UDO) and a technical college above average number of young people.

Carúpano is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Carúpano.

History

Christopher Columbus during his third trip to this region from entering American mainland at Macuto for the first and only time.

An outstanding event in the history of Venezuela was December 7, 1814, as Simón Bolívar in Carúpano ordered the freeing of slaves. Historical Significance was also the first underwater cable that connected in the 19th century America and Europe. It ran from Marseille in France to Carúpano. The Cable House ( Casa del cable) in the historic, colonial city core can still be seen today.

On May 4, 1962, came in Carúpano to " Carupanazo ", a military uprising against Rómulo Betancourt, who was, however, depressed the next day. There about 400 insurgents were arrested, six people died and 15 were wounded. Since there were some members of the Communist PCV and the MIR among the insurgents, these two parties were banned.

Economy

The city thrives on tourism and fishing, as well as the export of cocoa, coffee, sugar, cotton and rum The town is an ideal base for travelers in Venezuela. Four national parks are located in the immediate vicinity of the city, including the National Park Paria peninsula of the Orinoco delta resembling National Park Turuepano and Mochima and Guacharo.
