Sucre (Venezuela)

Sucre is one of the 23 states of Venezuela. It is located in the northeast of the country. In the north it borders the Caribbean Sea, on the south by the states of Anzoategui and Monagas, on the east by the Gulf of Paria and to the west by the Gulf of Cariaco. It owes its name to the Venezuelan State Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, a hero of the South American War of Independence, who was born in Cumana, now the capital of the state.

Geography

The state is crossed by the Rio Manzanares.

Historical

Columbus landed for the first time in the American mainland in the Paria region, in what is now the eastern part of Sucre State. He was here between the 4th and the 12th Augustus 1498th

The Indians, who had inhabited the region especially Guaiqueríes ( related according to Humboldt with the Warao ) and Khaimah (of Caribbean origin ).

This region was visited in 1799 and 1800 by Alexander von Humboldt and described in his report.

Economy

The fisheries, agriculture and tourism are the main economic activities of the region. The Mochima National Park between Anzoategui and Sucre is one of the main attractions of tourism in eastern Venezuela.

Administrative divisions

The State of Sucre was originally part of the province of New Andalusia or province of Cumana. Circa 1856 of which the province of Maturin was cleaved. To 1864 State Cumana was founded, in 1879 the part of the State of Oriente.

In 1891 he was named " Gran Estado Bermúdez ," until 1898 when it was finally renamed " State of Sucre ." To 1901, the states of Sucre and Maturin were separated, and in 1904 the state Bermúdez was reintegrated. In 1909, the boundaries of the two separate states of Sucre and Monagas was finally pulled.
