Cary Fukunaga

Cary Joji Fukunaga (* July 10, 1977 in Oakland, California) is an American film director, screenwriter and cinematographer.

Curriculum vitae

Born the son of a Japanese and a Swedish mother in California Fukunaga spent his youth in France, Japan and Mexico. Fukunaga graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in historical sciences.

His breakthrough had Fukunaga 2009 with the movie Sin nombre, which deals with the activities of the gang Mara Salvatrucha. Fukunaga also wrote the screenplay for the film and researched for several weeks in southern Mexico. The film won two awards at the 25th Sundance Film Festival.

In 2010 he started a new film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender in the lead roles. Jane Eyre was on 11 March 2011 in the U.S. and on December 1, 2011 in the German cinemas.

In 2014, Fukunaga took in all episodes of the first season of the HBO television series True Detective, the Director and also served as executive producer of the series.
