Caryophylliidae
Caryophyllia inornata
The Caryophylliidae are a family of stony corals. Among the approximately 300 species in addition to tropical, großpolypigen stony corals are also living in temperate seas into great depth cold-water corals of the genera Lophelia. The previously asked in the family subfamily Euphylliinae was charged by Veron to the rank of a family. Some Caryophylliidae species live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae and relate them to the main body of the needed nutrients, others are azooxanthellat (without zooxanthellae ) and feed exclusively by catching plankton. The coral colonies often consist of only a few polyps.
The family is probably polyphyletic, its monophyly is not confirmed by modern mokekularbiologische analyzes. In the family, numerous extinct stony coral genera are provided.
