Caspar Barlaeus

Caspar van Baerle ( born February 12, 1584 Antwerp, † January 14, 1648 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch humanist, author, theologian, historian and poet. He Latinized his Dutch name in Casparus Barlaeus.

Life

Caspar van Baerle was the son of the writer Caspar van Baerle and his wife Cornelia Eerdewijns. He studied theology at Leiden University and a doctorate in medicine at the University of Caen. In 1641 he became a professor of philosophy in Amsterdam. His Latin poetry was highly regarded. He was friends with PC Hooft and John Bodaeus van stack, got orders from the family De Graeff and was in correspondence with Constantijn Huygens and Descartes. In addition, he was portrayed by the eminent painter Gerard ter Borch.
